Growth Strategy #10: The Work

Growth Strategy #10: The Work

Good for: Evaluating and changing your perception about people and situations

"Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves."  C.G. Jung

One of my favourite processes to challenge perception is The Work by Byron Katie. It helps you to evaluate your ideas 💡 by increasing mental clarity through the use of four questions (and a turnaround.)

Katie suggests people's thoughts can cause suffering, 😔 especially when they believe their thoughts are true without challenging them.  Think about a situation and ask yourself the following questions:

1.Is it true? (Yes or no. If no, go to 3.)

Helps you discover if the thoughts you are believing are actually true or whether they are just true for you right now.

2. Can you absolutely know that it's true? (Yes or no.)

Do you know that your thoughts are absolutely true, beyond a shadow of a doubt or is it just the way you are seeing/experiencing things?

3. How do you react?, What happens, when you believe that thought?

Think about how these thoughts make you feel and act.  Do they affect who you are being and your peace of mind?

4. Who would you be without the thought?

Helps you to view how you are being affected by what you are thinking or feeling and who you would be without these thoughts and emotions attached to the person or situation.

5. Turn the question around - Consider whether what you believe about the person is actually within you.

"As long as you think that the cause of your problem is "out there"—as long as you think that anyone or anything is responsible for your suffering—the situation is hopeless. It means that you are forever in the role of victim, that you're suffering in paradise." Byron Katie

Have a great week!
