Growth Strategy #12 Motivational Filters

Growth Strategy #12 Motivational Filters

Good for: Helping you understand what drives and motivates you and whether these are positive things.

Best completed by: You

We are all motivated by something. Whether it's the desire to achieve personal growth, the need for approval or the fear of failure, our motivation determines the direction of our lives.

The problem is that not all motivation is positive. In fact, much of it is driven by negative emotions like fear and anxiety. The Motivational Direction Filter is a tool that can help you identify which motivations are driving your decisions and behaviour. By understanding your motivation, you can make better choices that lead to a more fulfilling and successful life.

Motivational Direction Filter is an NLP idea that invites us to consider that people move towards or away from something. 🔥

Tony Robbins is well known for talking about this idea, as he suggests it is helpful to find out whether you are moving towards something because you believe it will please you or away from something because you think it will cause you pain. 😔

The Motivational Direction Filter is a process that allows you to identify your top motivators and use them to set goals and make decisions. This filter can be used in any area of life, including work, relationships, and personal development.

Person #1: Towards Motivation - if a person chooses to lose weight because they want to live a healthy life, they are considered to be moving towards pleasure and possibilities, which could lead them to be pro-active.

Person #2: Away From Motivation - if a person chooses to lose weight because they don't want to put on weight or die, they are considered to be moving away from pain and problems. Thus they are more likely to be inspired by challenges or only when things go wrong.

One way to counter the negative effects of the away from motivation is to reframe what is driving you. For example, reframe 'I need to loose weight because I am too fat' to 'I need to lose weight to be healthy, fit and well.'

Knowing which stance you take is important because it will determine your focus and what inspires you to take action.  Here are some questions to help you identify what is driving you.

  • what makes you feel good?
  • when do you feel most in flow?
  • what makes you lose track of time?
  • what activities make you feel like your best self?
  • what makes you feel fulfilled?
  • what kind of people do you want to surround yourself with?
  • what kind of impact do you want to have on the world?
  • What do you want in partner/job/health/__________?
  • What is important to you about a partner/job/your health/__________?

Answer these questions truthfully, and they will give you some insight into what is driving you and whether these things are positive or negative.

Have a great week!
