Growth Strategy #47: The Zeigarnik Effect

I have used my understanding of the Zeigarnik Effect to maximise my personal and professional growth.   It is a psychological phenomenon that helped me to get better at focusing on tasks and achieve more.

I have always been good at starting things, and have had to get better at finishing them.  I used this idea to help me along the way.

Good for: Motivating you to finish things and get things done
Best completed by: You

The Zeigarnik effect was discovered by psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik, who noticed that people tend to remember incomplete tasks better than complete ones. This means that if we have an unfinished task or goal, we will be more likely to be motivated to finish it and put our energy into completing it.

In essence, this effect allows us to use what is known as “unfinished business” or the feeling of incompleteness to motivate ourselves and become successful in whatever endeavor we choose.

How Can We Use it
We can use the Zeigarnik effect consciously by breaking down our goals into small achievable steps. When we break down our goals into smaller chunks, it becomes easier for us to keep track of them as well as make progress towards achieving them.

Additionally, breaking down our goals helps us stay motivated because each step feels like an accomplishment in itself, which helps keep us motivated even when the overall goal seems too big or overwhelming.

Another way we can leverage the power of the Zeigarnik effect is by setting deadlines for ourselves when pursuing our goals. Deadlines help create a sense of urgency that encourages us to take action instead of procrastinating or getting distracted from our goals.

By setting realistic yet challenging deadlines for ourselves, we can ensure that we stay motivated and focused on achieving our desired outcomes faster than ever before!

Applications for personal growth

  1. Task completion: By leaving tasks incomplete, you may be more likely to remember and complete them later. This can be helpful if you have a long to-do list and want to ensure that all of your tasks are completed.
  2. Time management: By breaking larger tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks and focusing on one at a time, you may be more likely to complete each task and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  3. Goal setting: The Zeigarnik effect can be helpful in setting and achieving goals by helping you remember and stay focused on tasks that will help you reach your goals.
  4. Memory improvement: By intentionally interrupting tasks and then returning to them later, you may be able to improve your memory and recall skills.

It's important to note that the Zeigarnik effect is just one factor that can influence memory and task completion, and other factors such as motivation and ability can also play a role.

Experts who have written about the Zeigarnik effect

  1. Bluma Zeigarnik: Zeigarnik was a Russian psychologist who first described the effect that now bears her name.
  2. Kurt Lewin: Lewin was a German-American psychologist who conducted early research on the Zeigarnik effect and helped to further our understanding of the phenomenon.
  3. Daniel Kahneman: Kahneman is a Nobel laureate and psychologist who has written about the Zeigarnik effect in the context of decision-making and decision-making biases.
  4. Charles Duhigg: Duhigg is a journalist and author who has written about the Zeigarnik effect in his book "The Power of Habit" and has explored its practical applications in various contexts.
