Taking periodic “breaks” from relying on external stimulation for motivation can help reset your mental health and provide long-term benefits.  Many of us have a need for external stimuli, which can have an impact on how we feel about ourselves, our productivity, and the overall health of our brains.  

For some of my clients, I suggest they complete a dopamine detox, as an act of self-care and to reset their system - so they can have better control over their digital life.  This is also something that I had to do for myself as I became more aware of my sensitivity to boredom.

Dopamine detox programs are designed to help people reset their brains and break free from habits that may have led to an overstimulation of the reward center in the brain.

People may choose to detox in this way due to excessive stimulation from activities that trigger the release of dopamine, such as using social media, playing video games, or consuming junk food.

A dopamine detox program aims to reduce or eliminate activities that trigger the release of dopamine in the brain for a set period of time, allowing the brain's reward system to reset and become more sensitive to natural sources of dopamine, such as spending time with loved ones, engaging in hobbies, or achieving personal goals.

By taking a break from these activities and focusing on other areas of life, individuals may experience benefits such as increased motivation, improved mood, and better self-control, as well as a greater appreciation for the simple pleasures in life.

The length of a dopamine detox can vary depending on the individual and their goals, but it's generally recommended to start with a minimum of 24 hours and gradually increase the duration over time.

Here are some potential pros and cons of a dopamine detox program:


  1. Improved mental and emotional well-being: Taking a break from digital devices, reducing distractions, and engaging in activities such as exercise and social connection can help improve your mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase feelings of happiness and fulfillment.
  2. Increased productivity: By reducing distractions and simplifying your surroundings, you can increase your productivity and focus on the tasks that matter most.
  3. Improved physical health: Engaging in exercise and healthy eating can help improve your physical health, reducing the risk of chronic diseases and increasing overall energy levels.
  4. Increased creativity: Engaging in creative expression can help boost your creativity and allow you to tap into your emotions.
  5. Increased self-awareness: By taking a break from digital devices and other distractions, you can become more self-aware and better understand your habits and patterns.


  1. Discomfort or withdrawal: Depending on how heavily you rely on certain habits or behaviors, you may experience discomfort or withdrawal symptoms during the detox program.
  2. Time-consuming: Engaging in activities such as exercise, healthy eating, and creative expression can be time-consuming, which may be challenging for individuals with busy schedules.
  3. Lack of long-term impact: The benefits of a dopamine detox program may not last long-term if you do not make a sustained effort to maintain healthier habits.
  4. Potentially unrealistic: Depending on your lifestyle and work demands, some aspects of the dopamine detox program (such as digital detox) may be unrealistic or difficult to achieve.
